Henan province is located in the hinterland of central China. The province is often called the Central Plains because it is located in the middle of nine regions of China classified in ancient times and has many plains within its territory. At every stage of the development, Henan has always been the core region of the ancient Chinese civilization. Its cultural history is a microcosm of Chinese civilization.
Henan is the birthplace of Chinese civilization with the most prosperous prehistoric culture in China. The first state was established in Yuzhou. The earliest mature writing was in Anyang. Laozi and Zhuangzi, the two representative figures of Daoism, were born in Luyi and Minquan. The Chinese Buddhist culture, with a profound influence on the East Asia, first spread from Luoyang. The White Horse Temple in Luoyang, built during the reign of Emperor Ming of the Eastern Han dynasty (68 A.D.), was the earliest monastery in China. The temple is often named as "the origin of Buddhism", or "the Cradle of Buddhism". Many myths and legends took place in Henan province. From these myths come a lot of Chinese idioms such as Pangu Creating the Heaven and the Earth, Jingwei Trying to Fill up the Sea, Houyi Shooting the Sun, N?wa Creating Human Beings, Chang E Rushing the Moon, Fuxi Inventing the Eight Trigrams, Shennong Tasting Hundreds of Herbs, Cangjie Making Chinese Characters, and The Foolish Old Man Moving the Mountains.
Henan is also a home to a large number of heritage sites. The precious cultural relics include Zhengzhou City Ruins of the Shang dynasty, Anyang Yin Ruins, Luoyang City Ruins of Han and Wei dynasties; Luoyang City Ruins of Sui and Tang dynasties, Longmen Grottoes, the Grand Canal Ruins, Hometown of Wang Hai, the Ancestor of Chinese Businessmen in Shangqiu, Dongjing City Ruins of the Northern Song dynasty and Shaolin Temple. All of them are historical witnesses to the development of ancient culture in Henan province.
Since the day of its birth, TCM has been integrated into the excellent Chinese culture, and has become an inseparable part of it. It has been continuously enriched and perfected along with the development of Chinese civilization. In the process of its development and evolution, it always blends with the profound Chinese culture, and eventually becomes the treasure of China.
Henan is the major root of Chinese medicine, the cradle of Chinese nation and Chinese culture, the birthplace of Zhang Zhongjing. Great works of TCM such as the Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, the Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases, and the Shennong Herbal Encyclopedia were completed in Henan. Henan abounds in over 2780 kinds of Chinese herbs and takes the third place in terms of variety and quantity. Henan is also the place where Chen’s Taichi originated. Henan traditional Chinese medicine and its development are important part of Chinese traditional culture.
